Most garcinia specifications in circulation say one thing: “HCA 60%”. That names one of the three variables that determine what arrives in the drum. The salt form decides how it dissolves, how it tablets and what minerals it drags into your label. The free-acid-to-lactone split decides how much of that 60% is actually in the active form. Get all three into your specification and garcinia becomes a straightforward ingredient. Name only the first and you are buying on a number that can be met several different ways.
What Is Garcinia Cambogia Extract?
Garcinia extract is a concentrated preparation from the fruit rind of Garcinia gummi-gutta (L.) Roxb. — the currently accepted botanical name, though the trade still universally uses the synonym Garcinia cambogia. It is a small fruit tree native to the Western Ghats, called Malabar tamarind in English and kudampuli in Malayalam, and the dried rind has been used for centuries as a souring agent in Keralan cooking, particularly in fish curries.
That culinary use is the clue to the chemistry. The rind is sour because it contains (−)-hydroxycitric acid — HCA — a fruit acid structurally close to citric acid. HCA is the active, the marker and the entire commercial basis of the ingredient.
Variable One: The Assay Percentage (and Its Method)
The familiar number. Commercial grades run 50%, 60% and 70% total HCA, with 60% the mainstream. But the method behind it matters enormously:

This distinction is not academic. The rind naturally contains citric acid alongside HCA, so even an honest titration overstates. And because citric acid is one of the cheapest food acids in existence and structurally similar, titration-based specifications invite exactly the spiking you would expect. Specify HPLC by name.
Variable Two: The Salt Form
Free HCA is unstable, so commercial extracts are supplied as stabilised salts. Two families dominate, and they are not interchangeable:

Solubility, bulk density, tabletting behaviour and mineral contribution all shift with the salt. A formulator who specifies "HCA 60%" for a drink mix and receives a calcium-potassium salt has a product that will not dissolve, and no amount of process adjustment fixes it.
Buyer tip: write the salt family into the first line of the specification — "Garcinia extract, total HCA NLT 60% by HPLC, potassium-magnesium salt". If you are switching suppliers, check whether you are also switching salt forms. That change alters tablet weight, disintegration, dissolution and your mineral declaration all at once, and it is the kind of thing that gets discovered on a production line rather than in a spec review.
Variable Three: Free Acid vs Lactone — the One Nobody Asks About
This is the most consequential and least discussed quality variable in garcinia.
Free hydroxycitric acid readily cyclises to its lactone — an internal ring closure that happens under heat and continues slowly over time. The lactone is not considered the active form.
The commercial implication is direct. If a certificate reports a single combined "total HCA: 60%", that total may include a substantial lactone fraction. Two materials both certified at 60% total HCA can deliver quite different amounts of free acid — and free acid is what you are actually buying.
Ask for the split:
- Free HCA reported as its own figure.
- HCA lactone reported as its own figure.
- A lactone ceiling in the specification — NMT 5% is a reasonable ask on well-made material.
A supplier running a proper HPLC method resolves these anyway; reporting them costs nothing. A supplier who cannot, or will not, is either not running the method or would rather you did not see the answer. The chemistry is covered in our HCA and lactone standardisation guide.
The Labelling Detail Most Buyers Miss
HCA salts carry a real mineral load. At typical use levels a calcium-potassium salt contributes meaningful calcium and potassium to the finished product — enough to require accounting in a nutrition declaration, and enough to interact with potassium limits under some supplement frameworks.
Two practical points:
- Get calcium and potassium reported per batch so your declaration runs on measured values.
- Expect total ash to be high, and do not treat that as a defect. A calcium-potassium HCA salt legitimately carries a substantial mineral ash. A buyer applying a generic botanical ash limit will reject perfectly good material. Ash should be reported on this ingredient, not limited — while acid-insoluble ash, which catches soil and mineral bulking, should still carry a limit.

A Storage Note That Costs Money
Because free HCA cyclises to lactone under heat and humidity, storage slowly degrades this ingredient in a way it does not degrade most botanicals. A lot that shipped with 3% lactone can drift meaningfully higher after a summer in an uncooled warehouse. Total HCA barely moves — the mass is conserved — so a re-assay of the total will reassure you falsely. Re-assay the free acid if a lot has been held long or warm. Keep below 25°C, sealed, out of light.
On Positioning: A Word Worth Saying Plainly
Garcinia has been one of the most heavily scrutinised ingredients in the weight-management category, and regulatory authorities in several jurisdictions have at various points reviewed products containing it — often finished products where garcinia was one component among several, and where the concerns related to the formulation rather than the botanical alone.
The practical implication for a buyer is not to avoid the ingredient but to be disciplined with it: formulate to established use levels, avoid disease claims, keep complete ingredient documentation, and know exactly what else is in your blend. A well-documented garcinia extract with a full CoA is a defensible ingredient; the same extract in an under-documented multi-ingredient slimming product is a different risk profile. Buy the documentation, not just the powder.
