Cumin is one of the most heavily traded seeds on earth, and "cumin extract" is one of the easiest phrases in the botanical trade to get quoted on — and one of the easiest to get quoted wrongly on. Three different plants travel under the name cumin, four different materials travel under the name cumin extract, and a buyer who does not pin down both before requesting prices is comparing quotations for different products. This guide covers the naming trap, how to specify grade, and what a genuine Certificate of Analysis must show.
First, Which Cumin? The Naming Trap
Before grade, before price, before anything: establish the species. In international trade at least three unrelated botanicals are sold under a "cumin" name:
- True cumin — Cuminum cyminum L. (Apiaceae). The warm, savoury spice seed of curry, chilli and jeera water. Marker: cuminaldehyde. This is the material this guide — and SV Botanica's extract — covers.
- Black cumin — Nigella sativa (Ranunculaceae). Also sold as black seed or kalonji. A completely different plant from a different family, standardised on thymoquinone, with its own market and price structure. It is not a grade of cumin; it shares nothing with cumin but a trade name.
- Shahi jeera / kala jeera — depending on region, caraway (Carum carvi) or Bunium species. Visually closer to cumin seed than Nigella is, which makes it the more dangerous substitution.
Buyer rule: never enquire, quote or contract on the word "cumin" alone. Write Cuminum cyminum L. into the enquiry, the purchase order and the specification, and require the full binomial on the CoA. A surprising share of mismatched shipments in this category trace back to an enquiry that just said "black cumin extract" to a seller who stocked both.
Which Material? Four Commercial Families
Once the species is fixed, "cumin extract" still spans four genuinely different materials:
- Standardised extract — a powder assayed to cuminaldehyde 25–35% by GC, the mainstream grade for supplements, with a 35–45% high-potency grade for low-dose formats.
- Full-spectrum (native ratio) extract — a 10:1 preparation preserving the whole seed profile, positioned for traditional and Ayurvedic formats. Defined by ratio, not by a marker percentage.
- Oleoresin — a viscous liquid carrying the volatile and fixed oils, declared on volatile-oil content. This is the flavour-industry material; we supply it separately as cumin oleoresin.
- Essential oil — the steam-distilled volatile fraction alone, an aroma ingredient rather than a supplement active.

Three lines deserve particular attention on cumin specifically. The volatile profile — cuminaldehyde in natural proportion to p-cymene and the terpinenes — is the cheapest authenticity check there is, because spiked or substituted material does not reproduce it. Acid-insoluble ash catches mineral bulking and field soil in a ground-seed material. And ethylene oxide matters because cumin sits squarely in the spice-seed category that produced the EU's ETO enforcement wave — a positive finding at import means destruction of the consignment, not a discount.

- Batch-specific CoA stating grade (native ratio, or cuminaldehyde % by GC)
- The volatile profile — cuminaldehyde with its companion peaks — not just a single number
- TLC identity confirming correspondence with reference material
- Heavy-metal report by ICP-MS with numeric limits for Pb, As, Cd, Hg
- Aflatoxin report and acid-insoluble ash figure
- Pesticide residue report against EU MRL, and a non-ETO declaration
- Residual solvent, solubility, mesh and full microbiological panel
- Declarations: non-irradiated, GMO-free, allergen status
