Why Cranberry Is the Target

Botanical adulteration concentrates where three conditions meet: an expensive genuine material, a single-number purchasing habit, and an assay blind to the substitution. Cranberry meets all three more perfectly than any other mainstream extract. Fruit-solid raw material is costly and harvest-limited; buyers purchase on "PAC %"; and the DMAC colour reaction responds to any flavan-3-ol oligomer, cranberry or not.

The result was predictable enough that industry authenticity programmes β€” including the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program β€” have published dedicated bulletins on cranberry. This is not a theoretical risk category. It is a documented one.

Route 1 β€” B-Type PAC Substitution: Peanut Skin and Grape Seed

The signature cranberry fraud. Peanut-skin extract and grape-seed extract are rich in B-type proanthocyanidins, cost far less than cranberry, and lift a DMAC reading exactly as genuine material would. Blended in β€” or substituted outright β€” they produce a "cranberry PAC extract" that passes the buyer's stated assay while containing little or no cranberry.

What catches it: linkage-type analysis. HPLC profiling against procyanidin A2 shows whether the A-type marker chemistry is present in natural proportion; MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry resolves the oligomer series and shows the A-type mass signature directly, and is the arbitration method the authenticity literature recommends. A supplier who cannot produce either has never actually checked.

There is also a blunt secondary reason to care: peanut skin is an allergen-bearing raw material. An undeclared peanut-derived fraction in a supplement ingredient is not just economic fraud β€” it is a recall-grade safety failure. This is why the allergen declaration on a cranberry CoA deserves more attention than on almost any other botanical.

Route 2 β€” The Gravimetric Number Sold as a Standardised Grade

As covered in our standardisation guide, gravimetric PAC figures read 3–5× higher than BL-DMAC on identical material. The adulteration here is arithmetic rather than chemical: a "40% PAC" certificate meets a buyer's "NLT 15%" specification on paper while the material assays 6% by the method the buyer's formulation maths assumed. No foreign matter is added; the deception is entirely in the method column that is not there.

What catches it: a specification that names BL-DMAC and the procyanidin A2 standard, and a re-assay of the first lot by your own or a third-party laboratory on that method.

Specification language that works: "Proanthocyanidins NLT 5.0% w/w by BL-DMAC (procyanidin A2 standard), on dry basis. PAC linkage profile A-type, confirmed by HPLC; MALDI-TOF report on request. Carriers and excipients, if any, declared by name and percentage. Allergen status declared." Four sentences, and every documented cranberry fraud route now requires falsifying a document rather than exploiting an omission.

Route 3 β€” Cheaper Berries and Berry Blends

European small cranberry (V. oxycoccos), lingonberry, aronia and hibiscus-tinted blends can approximate the colour and tartness of V. macrocarpon at lower cost. Some appear as outright substitution, some as partial blending that stretches genuine material.

What catches it: the anthocyanin fingerprint. Genuine V. macrocarpon shows a characteristic galactoside-dominant profile β€” peonidin-3-galactoside and cyanidin-3-galactoside leading β€” that other berries do not reproduce. A single HPLC anthocyanin profile is a cheap, fast authenticity check that most adulterated lots fail immediately.

Route 4 β€” Whole-Fruit Powder Sold as Extract

Spray-dried cranberry juice or fruit powder is a legitimate product β€” as a whole-fruit ratio grade, honestly labelled. Sold as a concentrated PAC extract, it is dilution: typical whole-fruit powders carry a fraction of a percent of PACs by BL-DMAC. The tell is a price too good for the claimed grade and a CoA reluctant to state a method.

What catches it: the BL-DMAC assay itself, honestly run β€” the number simply is not there.

Route 5 β€” Undeclared Carriers and Colourants

Maltodextrin carriers are legitimate and often necessary in a juice-derived spray-dried material β€” when declared. The adulteration is the undeclared version, sometimes accompanied by added colourant to restore the deep red that dilution washed out. An extract with vivid colour but weak assay, or an anthocyanin figure wildly out of proportion to its PAC figure, deserves a closer look.

What catches it: a declared-carrier clause on the CoA, the ash and acid-insoluble ash limits, and an HPLC anthocyanin profile β€” synthetic or non-cranberry colourants do not reproduce the galactoside pattern.

Practical Steps for a Buyer

  1. Specify the method triple. BL-DMAC, procyanidin A2, dry basis β€” in the purchase contract, not the email thread.
  2. Require A-type confirmation on the first lot and annually thereafter. MALDI-TOF from a third-party laboratory settles arguments no colorimetric assay can.
  3. Run the anthocyanin fingerprint. One HPLC injection, and most substitution routes fail it.
  4. Take the allergen declaration seriously. On cranberry it is an authenticity control, not paperwork.
  5. Third-party verify before first shipment. Nominate Eurofins, SGS or Intertek; one independent report at the start of a relationship is worth a year of supplier certificates.
