Route 4 — Spent Fruit and Exhausted Marc
Extraction residue dried, milled and blended back. Retains the characteristic bitterness to some degree, which is persuasive on this material.
What catches it: the charantin assay and the momordicoside profile, since actives are depleted. The informal bitterness check helps too — spent material is noticeably flatter than its stated assay implies.
Route 5 — Undeclared Carriers
Maltodextrin, starch, rice flour. Legitimate when declared.
On bitter melon there is a useful visual tell: the extract is light green to olive-green from chlorophyll. Heavily carrier-bulked material is noticeably paler and flows better than it should.
What catches it: total and acid-insoluble ash, a declared-carrier line by name and percentage, and assay on a dry, carrier-free basis.
One caution on the colour tell: chlorophyll is light-sensitive and fades toward olive-brown on prolonged exposure. Pale material may be an older, poorly stored lot rather than a bulked one. Check the assay before concluding.
