The Correct Name

The Ayurvedic ashoka is Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Willd.

Saraca indica L. properly refers to a different species. It appears on a great deal of ashoka documentation, but it is not the correct name for this material.

The error is old and widespread. It propagates the ordinary way — a supplier copies the binomial from the document they received, a formulator copies it into a specification, a label copies the specification — and by repetition it acquires the appearance of standard usage.

Why It Matters More Than It Sounds

Three reasons, in increasing order of practical weight.

1. The binomial is the identification

Everything else on a certificate describes properties. The species line says what the material is. Getting it wrong is not a typographical matter on that particular line.

2. Regulatory filings inherit it

Ingredient declarations, dossiers and product labels carry the binomial forward. An error that entered at a supplier's certificate can end up in a regulatory submission, where correcting it is considerably more expensive than it would have been at the outset.

3. It is a signal about the document

This is the reason we mention it at all. A certificate carrying a species name that was copied rather than checked invites a fair question about what else was copied rather than checked. On an ingredient where the principal risk is substitution with an entirely different tree, a supplier's demonstrated care with botanical names is genuine information.

Standardisation: Two Measurements

As with other bark botanicals, an ashoka specification needs to answer two separate questions, and the conventional specification only answers one.

The Markers

As always, it is the pattern that carries the information. A single peak can be coincidental or added; a consistent profile across several related constituents is what a fingerprint comparison actually assesses.

The Tannin Assay: Name the Method

Tannin figures are strongly method-dependent — titrimetric, UV-based and protein-precipitation approaches give materially different numbers on identical material.

So "tannins NLT 5%" is not a comparable specification unless the method is stated. Two quotations differing on tannin percentage may differ only in analytical approach.

Grades and What Stays Constant

Across our grades — 5% and 10% tannins, native ratio, water-soluble — the strength basis changes and the identity controls do not. Species confirmation and the marker profile are on every certificate regardless of grade, because identity is not a grade feature.

In Short

Ask for the right name, ask for it to be confirmed, and ask what method produced the tannin number. Those three requests turn a conventional ashoka specification into one that establishes what is in the drum.
