When a spec sheet says “Amla extract 40% tannins,” what is actually being measured — and why should a formulator care? What Are Amla's Tannins?
Amla's defining actives are hydrolysable tannins — polyphenols built on a sugar core esterified with gallic or ellagic acid units. Amla is characterised by unusually low-molecular-weight tannins, most notably emblicanin A and emblicanin B, alongside punigluconin and pedunculagin. On hydrolysis these liberate gallic acid and ellagic acid, both widely used as analytical markers. Together this polyphenol complex is the primary driver of Amla's recognised antioxidant activity.
Amla is also famous as one of the richest natural plant sources of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). That vitamin C is real and native to the fruit — but, as we will see, it is a poor and easily manipulated basis for standardising an extract.
Why Standardise to Total Tannins?
Standardisation means fixing a measurable marker so every batch delivers a known active load. For Amla, total tannins is the marker that best represents the fruit's polyphenol matrix and antioxidant positioning. SV Botanica standardises its Amla extract to total tannins not less than 40% w/w. How Total Tannins Are Measured: Titration
SV Botanica's Amla extract is assayed for total tannins by titration. Titrimetric tannin assays (such as the classical permanganate/indigo carmine or protein-precipitation approaches used across pharmacopoeial and industry methods) quantify the total tannin fraction as a class, which is exactly what a “total tannins” claim describes. Because the result is expressed on a dry-weight basis, it is not distorted by residual moisture — loss on drying is controlled separately at NMT 10%.
Some suppliers instead report a single marker such as gallic acid by HPLC. That is a legitimate, more specific measurement, but it answers a narrower question (how much of one compound) than a total-tannin figure (how much of the whole class). When comparing two Amla quotes, always check whether “40%” refers to total tannins, to gallic acid, or to something else — the numbers are not comparable across methods.

None of these is “wrong” — but they are not interchangeable, and a formulator should choose deliberately. If your claim rests on antioxidant polyphenols, a tannin-standardised grade is the honest basis. If it rests on vitamin C, be prepared to prove the ascorbic acid is native rather than added. Reading an Amla Extract CoA
Beyond the tannin assay, a complete Amla CoA carries the physico-chemical and safety parameters that tell you the material is clean, consistent and manufacturable: appearance (dark-brown fine powder), sour taste, loss on drying (NMT 10%), pH of a 1% solution (2–7), bulk density (NLT 0.25 g/ml), ash (NMT 10%), water solubility (NLT 85%), and mesh (NLT 95% through #40). Heavy metals by ICP-MS and a full USP microbiological panel close it out. A defined tannin figure on a document missing these supporting lines should prompt questions.
