Why Amla Is a Target

Three things make Amla attractive to cut. It is bought on marker numbers (tannin % or vitamin C %) that can be gamed independently of the botanical; it commands a premium that rewards dilution; and it is a dark-brown, sour powder whose appearance is easy to mimic with cheaper materials. Because buyers often specify loosely — “Amla extract, high vitamin C” — there is room for a supplier to hit the number without delivering the fruit.

Common Adulteration Routes

  1. Carrier dilution: bulking the extract with maltodextrin, starch, dextrose or gum so a lower-strength material is sold at grade. Ash and loss-on-drying anomalies and a depressed tannin assay are the tell-tales.
  2. Synthetic vitamin C spiking: adding synthetic ascorbic acid to inflate a “vitamin C %” claim on material that is otherwise weak Amla — or barely Amla at all. This is the single most common Amla fraud.
  3. Added gallic acid: dosing purified gallic acid to lift a phenolic or “tannin” readout without the genuine emblicanin-led profile.
  4. Exhausted or spent fruit: using pomace already stripped of actives, then topping up the number with spikes.
  5. Species and plant-part substitution: blending in cheaper fruit powders or non-fruit plant material.
  6. Undeclared excipients: anti-caking and flow agents present but not stated, distorting the true extract content.

How a Genuine Amla Extract Is Authenticated

No single test catches everything; authenticity comes from a coherent panel where the results agree with one another and with the botanical.

The spiking test in plain terms: if a “high vitamin C” Amla shows a strong ascorbic-acid number but a weak total-tannin assay and an off TLC identity, you are almost certainly looking at spiked or diluted material. Genuine Amla carries its vitamin C and its emblicanin-led tannin profile together. Specifying to total tannins — as covered in the standardisation guide — removes the easiest route to fool you.

What Buyers Should Do

Protect yourself at the specification stage, not after the container lands. Specify total tannins by titration with TLC identity; require a fruit-only, correct-species declaration; ask explicitly whether any vitamin C is native or added and whether carriers/excipients are present; and demand a per-element ICP-MS heavy-metal report rather than a bare “complies.” For higher-value or regulated programmes, verify a batch independently at a third-party lab.
