Why Amla Is a Target
Three things make Amla attractive to cut. Because buyers often specify loosely — “Amla extract, high vitamin C” — there is room for a supplier to hit the number without delivering the fruit.
Common Adulteration Routes
- Carrier dilution: bulking the extract with maltodextrin, starch, dextrose or gum so a lower-strength material is sold at grade. Ash and loss-on-drying anomalies and a depressed tannin assay are the tell-tales.
- Synthetic vitamin C spiking: adding synthetic ascorbic acid to inflate a “vitamin C %” claim on material that is otherwise weak Amla — or barely Amla at all. This is the single most common Amla fraud.
