What Is Trikatu Extract?

Trikatu — Sanskrit for "three pungents" — is a named classical Ayurvedic formulation: equal parts black pepper (Piper nigrum fruit), ginger (Zingiber officinale rhizome) and long pepper (Piper longum fruit, the pippali of the classical texts). It appears throughout the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeial literature as the archetypal deepana-pachana — digestive-kindling — combination, and as the traditional vehicle used to improve the uptake of other herbs. A trikatu extract concentrates that formulation into a standardised powder, typically assayed to piperine 5–10% by HPLC.

Two things follow from the word "formulation". First, trikatu is defined by its proportion — the classical texts specify equal parts, and a blend that is not 1:1:1 is a different product. Second, the assay marker alone cannot police that proportion, because piperine comes from both pepper species. Those two facts drive everything else in this guide.

The Cost Asymmetry Every Buyer Must Understand

Of the three botanicals, long pepper is dramatically the most expensive — it is a lower-yielding, more limited crop that routinely trades at a multiple of black pepper. Ginger sits at commodity pricing. Black pepper is the world's most traded spice.

Now consider what a piperine specification sees. Black pepper fruit and long pepper fruit both contribute piperine. A supplier who skews the blend towards black pepper — 2:1:0.1 instead of 1:1:1, say — cuts their raw-material cost substantially, and the piperine assay still passes. The material looks right, smells right, and meets the number on the specification. It is simply not trikatu.

The core buying rule: in trikatu, the assay verifies the actives, but only the ratio verifies the product. Insist on a CoA that declares the 1:1:1 blend proportion as a specification line, backed by a batch formulation record — and on the secondary markers (gingerols, piperlongumine) that make it checkable. The first line is the one most CoAs in circulation are missing. A trikatu CoA that shows only "piperine: 5.4%" with no ratio declaration and no per-component markers is documenting an assay, not a formulation. On a blend of dried, ground spice materials the ETO line also deserves attention — all three components sit squarely in the EU's recognised ethylene-oxide risk category, and a positive finding at import means destruction of the consignment.
