Note the buyer row. Phycocyanin's customers are often food companies with no other botanical purchasing — colour houses, confectionery and dairy manufacturers — who evaluate on entirely different criteria from supplement brands.
Why Natural Blue Is Structurally Scarce
The reason phycocyanin commands a premium is worth understanding, because it is unlikely to change.
Blue is genuinely rare in nature as a stable, usable food colour. Natural reds, yellows and oranges have several viable sources; natural blue has very few. As reformulation pressure pushed manufacturers away from synthetic colours, the available natural blue options were limited — and phycocyanin became one of the principal answers.
The commercial consequence: phycocyanin demand is driven by reformulation policy and consumer clean-label pressure rather than by superfood trends. Those are slower-moving and more durable forces than a supplement fashion cycle — which makes the colour segment structurally more stable than the biomass segment, despite being smaller.
The constraint on that demand is technical rather than commercial: as covered in applications and formulation, phycocyanin is a protein and cannot survive hot-filled or acidic systems. So its addressable market is real but bounded — frozen, confectionery, chilled and neutral-pH formats.
What Is Driving Biomass Demand
Plant protein and vegan nutrition
Spirulina is among the most protein-dense ingredients available, which fits the plant-protein narrative well. Greens and superfood powders
The volume base. Steady, competitive, and price-driven — spirulina is a near-default component of greens blends alongside moringa and wheatgrass.
Tablets — the format that solves the taste problem
A large share of consumer spirulina is sold as tablets precisely because they bypass the marine taste that limits powder formats. Unglamorous but durable demand.
Food fortification
A smaller channel — pasta, snacks, plant-based dairy — where spirulina contributes both nutrition and a natural green-blue colour.
The Regulatory Split Buyers Miss
Worth stating because it catches companies moving between the two markets.
Spirulina as a supplement and phycocyanin as a food colour sit under different regulatory regimes. Colour use engages food-colour rules — permitted applications, maximum levels, category restrictions and labelling — which vary substantially by market and by food category.
A supplement clearance does not carry across to a colour application. A brand extending from a spirulina supplement into a blue-coloured confection is entering a different rulebook and should confirm the position per market before launch.
Supply Characteristics
- Cultivated, not harvested from the wild — supply is manufactured rather than agricultural, so it responds to demand faster than a crop.
- Open ponds dominate on cost; closed photobioreactors serve buyers who require lower contamination exposure.
- Production is climate-linked — spirulina needs warmth and sunlight, so output is seasonal even in favourable geographies.
- Quality is a production-control question, not a raw-material one. Two producers with identical strains can differ entirely on microcystin control.
That last point drives the whole qualification exercise: on spirulina you are buying a production system, not a commodity.
The Quality Spread
Because raw material is cultivated rather than sourced, supplier differences come down to production and testing discipline:
- Is microcystin testing per batch by LC-MS/MS? The defining differentiator, and a real analytical cost.
- Is the cultivation method disclosed? Costs nothing; often omitted.
- Are colour value conditions stated? Determines whether a quote is comparable.
- Is the material irradiated? Cheaper route to microbiological specification; unacceptable in several markets.
None is visible in a price list. A cheap spirulina quotation frequently reflects a skipped test or an undeclared process rather than a production advantage.
The Regional Picture
European Union
The most demanding market on both fronts. Microcystin limits in cyanobacterial supplements are applied, and food-colour rules for phycocyanin are specific by category. General import controls apply — MRLs, heavy metals, ETO — and irradiated material faces particular resistance.
United States
Large supplement demand under DSHEA plus a substantial natural-colour market driven by reformulation. Retailer and marketplace testing programmes have taken an interest in cyanotoxins, so the practical enforcement often comes from buyers rather than regulators.
Asia-Pacific
Both a major production region and a growing consumption market, with strong demand in plant nutrition and functional foods.
India's Position
India has favourable climate for spirulina cultivation, established production, and analytical infrastructure — NABL-accredited laboratories capable of the LC-MS/MS work that this ingredient requires.
That analytical point is the whole qualification question. Cultivating spirulina is not difficult; proving each batch is free of microcystins is, and that capability varies sharply between producers. Qualify for it explicitly rather than assuming it, using the supplier guide.
What This Means When You Buy
- Decide nutrition or colour first. Two products, two price bases, two regulatory regimes.
- Buy the testing programme, not the powder. On this ingredient that is the actual product differentiator.
- Treat a low quotation as a skipped-test signal. Cultivation costs are similar; testing costs are not.
- Check colour regulation separately if you are moving from supplements into food colour.
- Confirm the format supports phycocyanin before paying the colour premium — pH, heat and light decide it.
- Require non-irradiation explicitly.
- Re-verify on production-site changes. You are buying a system, and the system can change.
