There is a quiet flaw in how botanical identity is usually verified, and shankhpushpi exposes it perfectly. "Identification: complies" answers the question *does this match the reference*. It never states which reference — and on this ingredient, that is the entire question.
The Reference Problem
A standard certificate line reads:
"Identification (TLC): Complies with reference standard."
On most botanicals this is reassuring. On shankhpushpi it is close to meaningless, because it does not say which reference standard — and four different plants are legitimately sold under the name. A laboratory comparing against an Evolvulus alsinoides reference will report "complies" for Evolvulus alsinoides material, entirely correctly.
The test performed as designed. The document simply never asked the question you cared about.
What to Require Instead
Three components, and all three are needed:
- The binomial named — Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy;
- The reference material named — comparison against authenticated C. pluricaulis;
- The excluded species named — E. alsinoides, C. ternatea, C. decussata stated as not detected.
The third is what converts a declaration into a test result. "Species: C. pluricaulis" is an assertion. "Profile corresponds to C. pluricaulis reference; E. alsinoides, C. ternatea and C. decussata not detected" is a finding.
Why HPLC Rather Than TLC
TLC is a useful, inexpensive identity check and we run it. Its limitation on this ingredient is resolution: closely related species with overlapping chemistry — C. pluricaulis and E. alsinoides are in the same family — can produce broadly similar TLC patterns.
HPLC profiling gives the resolution required, comparing the flavonoid and phenolic pattern, with scopoletin as a supporting marker, against authenticated reference material.
The comparison is of the pattern, not a single peak. Any one constituent may occur in more than one species; the relationships between several are what characterise a plant.
The Easy One and the Hard One

E. alsinoides is where the analytical work is genuinely required. It is also, unhelpfully, the most likely substitution in practice, since the two plants grow in overlapping ranges and look alike as dried herb.
Beyond Species: Foreign Organic Matter
A control specific to whole-herb botanicals and easy to overlook.
Shankhpushpi is a small prostrate herb harvested from mixed ground vegetation. Whatever else is growing intermixed comes up with it unless collection is careful.
This is not species substitution — it is dilution with whatever shared the ground. Controls:
- Foreign organic matter limit at the raw-material stage — NMT 2%;
- Acid-insoluble ash — ground-level harvest brings soil;
- Microscopy on raw material before extraction.
Reading the Ash Figures
Buyers accustomed to root or seed extracts sometimes query the ash limits here:

The 2.5% reflects the botanical honestly. A figure well above it indicates inadequate washing, not an inherent property of the plant.
Independent Verification — One Instruction
If you send material to a third-party laboratory, tell them the binomial.
A laboratory handed a sample labelled "shankhpushpi" may reach for whichever reference their library holds. If that is a different species, you get a mismatch that reflects their reference rather than your material — and an argument that helps nobody.
