Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy — Convolvulaceae

A small prostrate herb of the morning-glory family, widespread across the Indian plains. This is the species most commonly intended in modern commercial nootropic formulation, and the one most work published on "shankhpushpi" as a cognitive botanical refers to.

Evolvulus alsinoides (L.) L. — Convolvulaceae

Also a morning-glory relative, also small and prostrate, with small blue flowers. Widely used under the name in several regions and genuinely difficult to distinguish from C. pluricaulis in dried, fragmented form.

Clitoria ternatea L. — Fabaceae

The butterfly pea — a climbing legume with striking blue flowers, from an entirely different family. It has an independent commercial life as a natural blue colourant, which is worth knowing: material can arrive in a supply chain for that reason and be routed to a shankhpushpi order.

Canscora decussata (Roxb.) Schult. — Gentianaceae

A third family again, in the gentian group, used under the name particularly in some regional traditions.

How Did This Happen?

Not through carelessness. Several ordinary forces produced it:

The result is a genuine, documented divergence in classical usage rather than a modern corruption — which is precisely why it cannot be resolved by buying from a more reputable supplier. Both parties can be honest and still mean different plants.

Why Dried Material Makes It Worse

In the field, a botanist separates these plants without difficulty — a climbing legume is not a prostrate morning-glory.

But shankhpushpi is traded as dried, fragmented whole plant, and often as powder. At that point the diagnostic features that make identification easy — growth habit, flower structure, fruit type — are gone.

By the time material reaches an extractor it is green-brown plant fragments, and the question can only be answered analytically.

The Literature Problem

This is the consequence most often missed, and it matters for anyone building claim substantiation.

Published work attributed to "shankhpushpi" spans all four species. A paper studying Clitoria ternatea and one studying Convolvulus pluricaulis may both be indexed under the vernacular name.

So a dossier that cites studies on one species for a product containing another has a gap in it — usually an unnoticed one, because nothing in the citation flags the mismatch.

Practical rule: when reading literature on this ingredient, find the binomial the study used. If the paper does not state one, it is of limited use for substantiating a specific material.

A Broader Lesson

Shankhpushpi is the most striking case but not the only one. Vernacular names across traditional systems frequently cover more than one botanical — brahmi is applied to both Bacopa monnieri and Centella asiatica in different regions, to take a familiar example.

The discipline that protects you is the same everywhere: specify the binomial, and require it to be confirmed rather than asserted.
