Most authenticity problems in botanicals are about the wrong plant. This one is about the right plant grown for the wrong purpose — which is harder to detect, because everything a certificate normally checks comes back correct.
Two Different Questions
Rose authenticity has two layers, and buyers usually address only the first:
- Species — is it Rosa damascena?
- Grade of cultivation — were these roses grown as an ingredient crop, or as ornamentals?
The second is more consequential and almost never asked.
The Species Layer
Several rose species circulate commercially:

The fix is simple and rarely applied: put the binomial on the specification. "Rose" does not distinguish these.
The Grade Layer — The Real Problem
Cut-flower and ornamental rose production is among the most intensively managed horticulture in existence. The crop is grown for uniformity, colour and vase life under sustained pest and disease programmes — and because nobody eats a bouquet, those programmes carry no obligation to respect residue limits applicable to food or cosmetic ingredients.
Now consider the economics. Ornamental rose production generates enormous quantities of petals — from grading waste, from unsold stock, from spent event flowers, from garden and municipal plantings. That material is:
- Cheap, often effectively free at source;
- Abundant and continuously available;
- Visually identical to petals from an ingredient crop, once dried;
- Undetectable by species identification, because it genuinely is rose.
Every conventional certificate check passes. Only two things address it.
The Two Controls
1. Cultivation purpose declaration
A statement on the certificate that the material comes from roses grown for food and extract use, not from ornamental or cut-flower production.
This is a supply-chain fact rather than an analytical result, which means it depends on the supplier actually knowing where their petals came from. Ask the question; a supplier who has never been asked may not know, and that itself is informative.
2. Pesticide residue screening
EU MRL screening treated as substantive, not as a routine box. This is where ornamental-stock material would show, and it is the reason we screen rather than assume.
The Other Routes
Three further issues, all more conventional:
- Other floral material blended in — particularly in dried petal grades, where other coloured petals bulk out a lot. Controlled by an other-floral-material declaration and by microscopy on whole petals;
- Species substitution — other roses supplied as R. damascena; controlled by identity testing and the flavonoid profile;
- Added synthetic colour — and this one deserves a paragraph of its own.
Why Colour Adulteration Is a Live Risk Here
Rose petal colour comes from anthocyanins, which are inherently unstable — degraded by heat, light, oxygen and unfavourable pH. Material naturally dulls with age and processing.
That creates a direct commercial incentive: a faded batch looks weak, so enriching it with added dye makes it saleable. And because buyers routinely judge rose material by appearance — understandably, since it is a decorative product in many uses — the incentive is rewarded.
Synthetic dye screening by HPLC settles it. We recommend it particularly for material sourced through trading chains rather than direct from a processor.
The corollary is worth internalising: do not judge rose quality by colour. A duller batch may simply be an honest one.
