Nearly every botanical processor handling organic material also handles conventional. Dedicated organic-only plants exist but are rare, and assuming otherwise leads buyers to ask the wrong question.
Shared Equipment Is Normal
The economics are unforgiving. Certified organic volume in any given botanical is a fraction of conventional volume, and an extraction train, a mill or a dryer represents serious capital. Running it for organic alone means leaving it idle most of the year.
So organic standards do not prohibit shared equipment. They require that the changeover be controlled and documented. The right question is therefore not "is your facility organic-only" — the answer is almost always no — but "how do you run the changeover, and can you show me".
What a Controlled Changeover Involves
Scheduling. Organic material is run in campaigns rather than interleaved with conventional lots. This is where a real cost sits: campaign scheduling reduces flexibility and creates idle time, which is part of the organic premium.
Cleaning, with a defined procedure. Not a general tidy. A documented cleaning protocol for that equipment, with the cleaning agents themselves checked for acceptability — there is little point removing conventional residue by introducing a prohibited cleaner.
Validation. Evidence the cleaning works: swab results, rinse-water testing, or residue analysis on the first organic output. Validation is what separates a procedure from a hope.
First-run flushing. The opening portion of an organic run after a changeover is frequently diverted and downgraded to conventional, on the reasoning that it carries whatever remained in the line. A processor who mentions flushing unprompted is usually running a serious system.
Storage separation. Often the weakest link. Extraction may be well controlled while organic and conventional drums sit adjacent in the same warehouse with similar labels. Physical separation and unambiguous labelling matter as much as the process step.
All five leave records. The audit trail is the control — it is what the certifier inspects, and it is what a buyer can reasonably ask to see summarised.
Why This Reaches Your Certificate of Analysis
Segregation failures do not usually announce themselves as an organic problem. They show up as an analytical one: a trace pesticide residue on certified material, of a compound with no plausible field route. That is one of the mechanisms behind residues on organic material, and it is a reason to keep testing per lot rather than treating the certificate as the result.
What to Ask a Supplier
- Is organic run in campaigns, and roughly how often?
- Is there a documented cleaning procedure for the changeover, and has it been validated?
- Is the first run after changeover diverted?
- How is organic material stored and labelled relative to conventional?
- Will the lot I receive be from a dedicated campaign, and can the batch record be referenced on the certificate?
None of these require a buyer to be a process engineer. What they test is whether the supplier has thought about it — and a supplier who answers "we only do organic" for a botanical where that is implausible has told you something useful.
The Practical Consequence
Because organic runs are scheduled rather than continuous, organic requirements need to enter a sourcing conversation earlier than conventional ones. A buyer who can align with an existing campaign gets better pricing and shorter lead times than one asking a processor to break a conventional run.
