Organic certification governs how a crop is grown and handled. It does not place a physical barrier around the field, and it cannot undo what was in the soil before the conversion period started.
The Common Misreading
Buyers frequently treat an organic certificate as a substitute for a residue report. The logic feels sound — no synthetic pesticides were applied, so there should be no residues — and it fails on contact with how agriculture actually works.
Certification is a process standard. It attests to practices, inspections and records. It is not an analytical result about the material in front of you, and the two can diverge for reasons that involve no wrongdoing at all.
Five Ways Residues Reach Certified Material
Spray drift. An organic plot beside a conventional one receives whatever the wind carries. Buffer zones reduce this; they do not eliminate it, particularly in smallholder landscapes where plot boundaries are tight.
Soil persistence. Some compounds are long-lived. A field converted to organic can carry residues from applications that predate certification by years, and the plant takes them up regardless of the paperwork.
Water and dust. Irrigation drawn from a shared source, and dust from adjacent land, both move residues across boundaries that exist on a map rather than in the environment.
Shared equipment and storage. Harvesting, drying, milling and warehousing are frequently shared between organic and conventional lots. Inadequate cleaning between runs transfers small quantities — the subject of a separate piece. Storage fumigation is a particular risk on warehoused botanicals.
Substitution. The uncomfortable one. Where organic commands a premium, conventional material sometimes enters the chain carrying organic paperwork. A residue finding is often the first signal — see how that fraud actually works.
The first four are ordinary agricultural reality and are anticipated by the standards. The fifth is fraud. A residue result alone does not tell you which one you are looking at — the level and the compound do.
Reading a Positive Result
A trace detection on organic material is not automatically a scandal, and treating it as one leads buyers to reject sound material while learning nothing.
- Trace levels of a persistent legacy compound are consistent with soil history or drift.
- A currently-used compound at a meaningful level is a different conversation. It suggests recent application somewhere in the chain.
- A compound with no plausible route to that crop in that region is the one that should stop the consignment.
Organic programmes generally treat unavoidable environmental contamination differently from applied treatment, but the determination sits with the certifier, not the buyer, and not the supplier. What you can do is have the data.
What to Require on Organic Material
- A per-lot pesticide MRL screen, exactly as you would on conventional — not per contract, per lot;
- Heavy metals by ICP-MS, which organic status does not address at all, since metals are largely a soil and geography question;
- Ethylene oxide status declared, since fumigation is a post-harvest issue independent of cultivation;
- The transaction certificate, so that if a result does need explaining, the chain is traceable.
