What Is Horny Goat Weed Extract?
Horny goat weed is the trade name for the Epimedium genus, family Berberidaceae — yin yang huo in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where the aerial parts have been used in tonic formulations for centuries. The commercial extract is prepared from the leaf and aerial parts, which carry a distinctive family of prenylated flavonol glycosides: icariin as the headline marker, with epimedins A, B and C and baohuoside I alongside.
A standardised extract is defined by its icariin content, assayed by HPLC. That single number is what you are buying — and, as with every single-number botanical, it is also where the games are played.
The Species Question — Ask It First
"Epimedium" is not one plant. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia recognises several source species, and the trade uses more:

The ratios of icariin to the epimedins and baohuoside I are species signatures. Two drums can both read "icariin 10%" and behave differently in a full-spectrum sense because one is E. brevicornu and the other an undeclared blend. If your product's chromatographic fingerprint matters — and for any brand doing its own identity testing, it does — an undeclared species mix is the quiet variable behind batch-to-batch drift. Insist the source species is declared on the CoA, not just in an email.
How to Specify Grade: One Marker, Two Bases
Commercial Epimedium extract comes in a potency ladder — 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% — but the ladder changes basis at the top, and that is the trap:
- Icariin 10% / 20% / 40% — the single icariin peak, by HPLC. These are true single-marker claims.
- "Icariins" 60% — total icariins: the HPLC sum of icariin plus epimedins A, B, C and baohuoside I. A legitimate specification, widely traded — but a different claim.
The wording trick: a "60% icariins" extract is not a 60% icariin extract — its actual icariin content may be a fraction of that figure, with the balance made up by the epimedins. Sellers who drop the final "s", quote "60% icariin (UV)", or leave the basis off the CoA are converting a total-flavonoid material into a premium single-marker price. The Category-Integrity Question
The men's-vitality segment has a documented history of finished products spiked with undeclared synthetic PDE5 inhibitors — sildenafil and its structural analogues — introduced by bad actors at the formulation or contract-manufacturing stage. Regulators in the US and EU have pulled hundreds of such products over the years. This is a finished-product crime, not a property of botanical extracts — but it defines the compliance climate your product will launch into.
