How to Qualify a Gymnema Extract Supplier: A Scored Checklist

Three Disqualifying Red Flags

1. A gymnemic acid percentage with no method stated. As covered in our standardisation guide, the figure is method-dependent and uninterpretable without it. A supplier whose standard CoA omits the method either does not understand the limitation or would rather you did not consider it.
2. Cannot or will not verify sweetness suppression. The test costs essentially nothing and requires no equipment. Reluctance is not about cost.
3. Sells a 75% grade at a price implying it is simply "three times a 25%". A supplier who presents high-assay grades without acknowledging the method basis is either uninformed about their own product or is relying on you being uninformed about it.

A candid answer — that higher grades reflect a different analytical basis — indicates a supplier who understands their material and expects to be dealing with a sophisticated buyer. An evasive answer tells you the opposite.

Collection status earns its points. Gymnema is a climber gathered from its native range as well as cultivated, and downstream customers increasingly ask. A supplier who tracks it has a real chain behind them.

Interpreting the Score

Apply a floor across sections 1 and 2 combined: below 22 of the available 40, decline. Those two sections are what separate a supplier selling verified material from one selling a number.

The Sample Stage — Run the Test Yourself

Gymnema is the one ingredient in this category where your own sensory check outperforms the paperwork.

• Do the sweetness test. Small amount on the tongue, wait, then taste something sweet. Genuine potent material abolishes sweetness unmistakably for around half an hour. Weak or brief effect means weak or adulterated material, whatever the certificate says.
• Compare grades functionally if you are offered several. If a 75% sample does not suppress sweetness noticeably more than a 25% sample, you have learned what the extra 50 percentage points represent.
• Check the sample CoA states the assay method. If absent there, absent on bulk.
• Check colour and flow. Green to dark green; unusually pale and free-flowing suggests bulking — though allow for light-faded older stock.
• Did they ask about your format? A supplier who does not ask whether your product is chewed or swallowed has not thought about the taste-blocking interaction, which is the main formulation issue on this ingredient.

First-Order Protocol

1. Nominate an independent laboratory — Eurofins, SGS or Intertek — for pre-shipment sampling. Ask them to state their gymnemic acid method, so a discrepancy can be attributed correctly.
2. Run your own sweetness check on the shipped lot as part of incoming goods. It is your most direct potency control and it requires nothing but a minute.
3. Request an HPLC saponin profile at first order and on any change of source.
4. Retain a sealed, dated sample, stored dark. Useful later both for assay comparison and for re-running the functional check.
5. Re-verify at batch three, then annually, and always on a change of collection area or manufacturing site.
