Almost everything that makes ginseng valuable comes down to compounds concentrated in the roots of Panax ginseng:

A meaningful standardisation captures the ginsenoside fraction, because ginsenosides are what differentiate a concentrated active from ordinary root powder — and what is diluted or substituted in cheaper material.

What HPLC Standardisation Means

Total ginsenosides in ginseng extract are quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC): the major ginsenosides are separated, identified against reference standards, and summed to a total, expressed as a percentage of the sample. SV Botanica supplies three standard grades — total ginsenosides not less than 10%, 20% and 30% w/w by HPLC.

Key point: HPLC is the established, industry-standard method for ginsenosides. It both quantifies the total and reveals the profile — the pattern of individual ginsenosides — which is exactly what makes it a species-identity tool as well as an assay. The number on the CoA is only meaningful when the method is stated alongside it.

HPLC vs UV — Why the Method Matters

Ginseng is sometimes standardised by UV spectrophotometry to a “total saponin” figure, which is quicker but cannot distinguish individual ginsenosides or resolve one Panax species from another. HPLC measures the named ginsenosides and produces a fingerprint, so it supports both the assay and authentication in a single method. What matters for a buyer is not HPLC-versus-UV in the abstract, but that the method is fixed and stated: a 20% figure by HPLC is a defensible claim; a larger number with no method behind it is not.

Why Identity Testing Sits Alongside the Assay

An assay tells you how much ginsenoside is present; it does not, on its own, tell you the material is the correct species. That is where the HPLC ginsenoside profile earns its keep — the batch's fingerprint is compared against reference material for Panax ginseng. Because other Panax species carry a different ginsenoside pattern (for example, a different Rg1-to-Rb1 balance), the profile confirms the right botanical, not just the right total. Reading the Numbers on a CoA

When you see a ginseng extract CoA, look for four things in the actives block:

  1. A stated total ginsenoside % with the method (HPLC).
  2. An identification line referencing an HPLC profile versus reference material.
  3. The grade clearly tied to the assay (10%, 20% or 30%), so cost per kilo can be normalised against active delivered.
  4. Consistency batch-to-batch — a supplier who can hold ginsenosides within a tight band at grade is demonstrating real process control.

Higher and intermediate ginsenoside grades are available against buyer specification, but “lower cost per kilo” is only meaningful once you normalise for the actual ginsenoside delivered.
