Ginkgo is the one botanical where a well-designed, universally adopted specification became the cause of a quality crisis. Everyone quotes 24/6. The number is precise, comparable and easy to verify — and because the assay that measures it can be satisfied by compounds from far cheaper plants, ginkgo became the most adulterated ingredient in the botanical trade. This guide is about the three lines you must add to 24/6 to make it mean something.
What Is Ginkgo Biloba Extract?
Ginkgo extract is a concentrated preparation from the fan-shaped leaf of Ginkgo biloba L. — a genuine living fossil, the sole surviving species of an order of trees that predates flowering plants. That taxonomic isolation turns out to be commercially useful, as we will see.
Two active families define it:
- Flavone glycosides — flavonol glycosides, standardised to 24%. Common plant compounds.
- Terpene lactones — ginkgolides A, B and C plus bilobalide, standardised to 6%. Found in no other plant.
Hold on to that asymmetry. It is the key to the whole ingredient.
The 24/6 Specification, and Why It Is Not Enough
The industry converged long ago on flavone glycosides NLT 24%, terpene lactones NLT 6%, universally shorthanded "24/6". Nearly every commercial ginkgo extract quotes it, which genuinely helps buyers compare like with like.
The problem is in how the 24% is measured. Flavone glycosides are assayed by hydrolysing them to their flavonol aglycones — quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin — and summing those.
Which means anything else that hydrolyses to those aglycones counts too:

A weak ginkgo extract topped up with rutin reads 24% flavone glycosides while containing a fraction of the genuine article. This is not a theoretical vulnerability; it is the established reason ginkgo carries the trade's worst adulteration reputation.
Line One to Add: The Flavonol Aglycone Ratio
Here is the defence, and it is elegant. Authentic ginkgo leaf yields quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin in a characteristic proportion. Rutin, Sophora and buckwheat contribute quercetin almost exclusively.
So spiking to hit 24% inevitably distorts the ratio — pushing quercetin up relative to kaempferol and isorhamnetin — even though the total is perfect. The sum conceals; the profile discloses.
The single most important line to add to a ginkgo specification: "Quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin to be reported individually, with the ratio confirmed within the authentic range for Ginkgo biloba, on every batch Certificate of Analysis." A supplier running a proper HPLC method has these three numbers already — they are what the 24% figure is calculated from. Declining to report them is a choice, not a cost. Add a rutin screen alongside it — "rutin: not detected" — which closes the most common route directly.
Line Two to Add: Ginkgolic Acid, NMT 5 ppm
Ginkgolic acids are alkylphenols in ginkgo leaf, structurally related to the urushiols that cause poison ivy reactions. They are allergenic and cytotoxic, and pharmacopoeial and industry practice converges on not more than 5 ppm in a finished extract.
This is a genuine safety limit — but it is also one of the most informative quality signals on the certificate, for a reason worth understanding:
Ginkgolic acids do not go away on their own. Removing them to below 5 ppm requires a deliberate purification step. A supplier meeting the limit is demonstrating real process capability; a supplier who has never measured it is telling you their process was not designed with it in mind.
Some buyers and markets specify tighter — NMT 1 ppm is available and worth asking for if your customer base is demanding.
Line Three to Add: Resolve the Terpene Lactones Individually
Remember the asymmetry: ginkgolides and bilobalide occur in no other plant. There is no cheap botanical source to spike them from. That makes the 6% half of the specification far harder to fake than the 24% half — and therefore far more informative.
Exploit that. Rather than accepting a single "terpene lactones: 6.2%" figure, ask for ginkgolide A, ginkgolide B, ginkgolide C and bilobalide reported individually. Authentic material produces them in a characteristic pattern, and an implausible distribution that happens to sum correctly is worth a question.
It is the same logic as the aglycone ratio, applied to the other half of the specification. A sum conceals; a profile discloses.

Note the residual solvent line mentions acetone. Ginkgo extraction commonly uses acetone-water systems, which is normal and appropriate — but it means the residual solvent parameter deserves attention rather than being skimmed past as a formality.
A Labelling Consideration
Ginkgo is commonly flagged in consumer and healthcare guidance for potential interaction with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication, often with advice around surgery. Advisory labelling is standard practice in many markets. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, so the wording is a matter for your regulatory review — but this is a well-established consideration rather than an obscure one, and a responsible finished-product label addresses it.
