Berberine HCl is a bright yellow alkaloid salt with a very bitter taste. Those two facts decide most of the formulation. Nearly every berberine product on the market is a capsule or a coated tablet. Here is why, and how to choose the grade.
Taste and Colour Rule Out Most Food Formats
Berberine is intensely bitter at the doses used in supplements, which are usually hundreds of milligrams per serving. Masking that in a drink, powder stick or gummy is difficult and adds a lot of sweetener and flavour.
It is also a strong yellow dye. It stains equipment, gloves and packaging. Plan line cleaning before you schedule a run.
Capsules
Hard capsules are the default. Berberine HCl is a fine crystalline powder, so check bulk density and flow before choosing the shell size. A flow aid is often needed on automatic fillers. Opaque shells hide the colour.
Tablets
For tablets, use granulation or a direct-compression excipient system, then film-coat. The coat masks bitterness on swallowing and stops colour transfer. Check disintegration after coating, because a heavy coat slows it.
Absorption
Berberine is poorly absorbed. Liu and colleagues (Drug Metabolism and Disposition, 2010) found an absolute oral bioavailability of 0.36% in rats. They traced most of the loss to first-pass elimination in the small intestine.
This is why some brands look at dihydroberberine or absorption partners. We supply dihydroberberine on request. Any claim about better absorption needs evidence for your specific form and must fit your market’s rules.
Choosing the Grade
| Grade | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Berberine HCl 97% (HPLC) | Standard capsules and tablets |
| Berberine HCl 98% (HPLC) | Products specified to a higher purity |
| Berberine HCl 90% (HPLC) | Cost-sensitive blends and combination products |
| Berberis aristata root extract (4:1, 10:1 or 5–10% berberine) | Traditional Ayurvedic formulas |
| Dihydroberberine (on request) | Absorption-led, lower-dose products |
Specify the assay method (HPLC) and whether the figure is on the anhydrous basis. Our berberine purity testing guide explains why that changes the number.
Check the Regulatory Position First
Berberine is under regulatory review in the EU, and several countries treat high-dose berberine as a medicine. Confirm the status in each target market before you design the product. Our berberine regulatory guide sets out the current position.
Grades and documents are on the berberine extract page.
