Three Routes

Adulteration on this ingredient comes in three forms, in descending order of how difficult they are to detect:

  1. Species substitution with related Terminalia barks;
  2. Part substitution — wood and heartwood milled in with bark;
  3. Product substitution — milled bark powder supplied against an extract specification.

Only the third is reliably caught by the assay most buyers specify.

Route One: The Related Species

Terminalia is a large genus, and several of its members grow in the same Indian forests as arjuna:

The first two are the practical risk. Their bark is difficult to distinguish from arjuna once dried and milled, they are tannin-rich, and they cost less.

The last two matter differently. T. bellirica and T. chebula are the other two fruits of triphala, so they move through the same collectors, the same drying yards and the same traders as arjuna bark. Cross-contamination there is a logistics failure rather than a deliberate substitution, but it reaches the same place.

A tannin assay does not distinguish any of these from arjuna. They are all tannin-rich barks. The specification is met; the material is not arjuna. This is the failure mode that matters, and it is invisible on a conventional certificate.

What catches it: HPLC profiling of the triterpenoid fraction against authentic T. arjuna reference material. The arjunolic acid pattern is characteristic; the tannin figure is not.

Route Two: Wood in the Bark

Arjuna is harvested by stripping bark from a standing tree with hand tools. The wood underneath is immediately available, weighs well, and once milled it is not obviously distinguishable by eye.

Much of this is not deliberate adulteration at all — it is careless stripping, or bark left with adhering wood, or material milled without cleaning. The commercial effect is the same: markers and tannins diluted by inert woody matter.

A Note on Reading Ash

Arjuna requires a little care here, because the botanical itself is mineral-rich — notably in calcium and magnesium — so total ash runs higher than on most extracts as a matter of course.

Buyers who apply a leaf-extract intuition to an arjuna certificate raise false alarms on total ash and, worse, sometimes accept a supplier's explanation that a high acid-insoluble ash is "just the mineral content". It is not. Total ash reflects the botanical; acid-insoluble ash reflects soil, grit and wood. Read them separately.

Route Three: Powder Sold as Extract

The simplest substitution, and the easiest to detect.

Milled arjuna bark powder is a legitimate product for classical churna preparations. It is not concentrated, carries native-level tannins and markers, and costs a fraction of what an extract costs.

What catches it: the tannin assay, straightforwardly — unconcentrated bark will not approach a 40% specification — supported by colour, since milled bark is noticeably paler than extract.

When an arjuna offer is dramatically cheaper than the market, this is usually the explanation, and it is worth ruling out before assuming you have found a better supplier.

Three questions, and the answers are informative regardless of who supplies you:

  1. "What method produced the tannin figure?"
  2. "Can you provide a triterpenoid marker profile against T. arjuna reference?"
  3. "Is the stem-bark declaration on the certificate, and what is the acid-insoluble ash?"
