Shatavari’s traditional use as a galactagogue is the reason most lactation blends contain it, and the clinical evidence, while limited, points the same way. The commercial risk is not the ingredient; it is the claim. What can be said about shatavari and breast milk differs sharply between the EU, the US and India, and a formulation brief that ignores that ends up relabelled.
What the evidence supports
Traditional use is long and well documented in the Ayurvedic literature. The modern evidence is thin but consistent in direction: a small randomised, placebo-controlled trial in lactating mothers (Gupta and Shaw, 2011, Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research) reported higher serum prolactin and improved measures of milk output in the shatavari group over the study period, using the root powder at a weight-based daily dose. Animal and mechanistic work points to a prolactin-mediated effect attributed to the steroidal saponins. That is a reasonable basis for traditional-use and structure-function positioning; it is not a basis for a therapeutic claim, and the trial is small enough that a brand should not quote effect sizes on pack.

- Shatavari belongs to the Asparagaceae; a small number of allergy reports exist and an allergen statement should be on the specification.
- Use in pregnancy is a labelling decision most brands take conservatively; a “consult a healthcare professional” line is standard for lactation products in any case.
- Interactions with prolactin-modulating medicines are theoretical but worth a cautionary line.

Format: capsules and dissolvable sachets dominate; teas and gummies exist but carry lower doses.
