Dose by EGCG, Not by Powder

A “500 mg green tea extract” can deliver anywhere between 100 and 450 mg of EGCG depending on the grade. The relevant figures are:

Specify the serving in milligrams of EGCG by HPLC, and require the COA to report EGCG and total catechins by HPLC rather than total polyphenols by Folin-Ciocalteu alone; the two methods are explained in our catechin assay explainer.

The Safety Ceilings

A 2018 systematic review of the safety of green tea and green tea extract in adults derived a safe intake level of 338 mg EGCG per day for solid bolus doses (capsules and tablets) and 704 mg per day when consumed as a beverage. The United States Pharmacopeia’s comprehensive review of green tea extract hepatotoxicity concluded that liver-related adverse events cluster around high-dose, concentrated extracts taken in a fasted state, and led to a labelling caution recommendation. European risk assessment reached a similar position, associating intakes at or above 800 mg EGCG per day from supplements with liver enzyme elevations.

The formulation rule that follows is simple: keep EGCG at or below about 300 mg per day from a solid product, direct that it be taken with food, and do not stack it with other EGCG sources in the same regimen. Higher-EGCG grades are useful for lowering the serving weight, not for raising the daily EGCG.

Efficacy Doses in the Literature

Trials on weight, metabolic and antioxidant endpoints have mostly used 200 to 400 mg EGCG per day for 8 to 12 weeks, often with caffeine present, and results are modest and mixed. That band sits inside the safe intake level for solid doses when taken with meals, which is why it is the usual formulation target.

Caffeine

Standard extracts carry 2% to 8% caffeine unless decaffeinated; a 500 mg serving of a 5% material delivers 25 mg, about a quarter of a cup of coffee. Declare it, because it changes both the labelling and the safety assessment in several markets. Decaffeinated grades (under 0.5% or under 1%) are available and should be specified where the product is marketed for evening use or to caffeine-sensitive consumers.
